“Giving Tuesday: Bay Area Supports Nursing Education in Africa”

Support the Gretta Foundation!

(San Francisco, CA) – People in Africa who are badly in need of medical care are now getting help thanks to a San Francisco Bay Area non-profit. But more can be accomplished through “Giving Tuesday” donations

The Board of Directors for The Gretta Foundation www.GrettaFoundation.org recently announced selection of another 10 candidates for admission to nursing and midwifery school in Uganda. The candidates reported to school on November 17 with their first year of funding paid up front. But their needs are many.

“One student came without anything so the school has started by shopping for a mattress, bed sheets, and other basic needs,” said Sister Cathy Nakiboneka, who recently visited the Bay Area. “Everything on admission will be provided,” she added.

To help fully fund the scholars through the entire term of their education, so that the scholars can focus on their education without financial concerns, The Gretta Foundation has launched a Fund a Nurse: Transform Lives! crowdfunding campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise $20,000, of which nearly $9,000 has been raised leading in to Giving Tuesday. The URL for the campaign is: http://fundanurse.mydagsite.com/

The Gretta Foundation funds programs for nursing and mid-wife candidates. Emphasis is placed on supporting conflict survivors and AIDS orphans. Each scholarship provides the recipient with an annual tuition, room and board, living allowance, books, school uniforms, and clinical supplies.

Graduating scholars are required to serve in their country’s clinics and hospitals for a period of time commensurate with each year of academic assistance. To date, The Gretta Foundation has funded 29 Gretta Graduates currently working in their respective home communities. With the addition of the 10 just approved there are now 20 Gretta Scholars currently being funded.

The Foundation’s mission is to increase the number of frontline nurses and midwives in disease-burdened countries through the provision of in-country scholarships. The Gretta Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 2007 by Meg Styles in honor of her mother, the late Dr. Margretta (“Gretta”) Madden Styles. Dr. Styles was Dean of the UCSF School of Nursing from 1976 through 1985 before becoming President of the American Nursing Association, and the International Council of Nursing.
