The Milpitas Chamber of Commerce joined a dozen other organizations and people by writing a
letter of support for the proposed Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) project. PRT is an elevated
transit system with many small neighborhood stations that works like a horizontal elevator. Proposed by LoopWorks for the Metro Area of Milpitas, the project is needed because the
Metro Area is divided by 2 major roads, 2 rail lines, and 2 creeks.
As noted in the Jan. 11 presentation to the Board, the dual-loop PRT system will knit together a 1.4 square-mile area that is currently difficult for walkers and rollers to traverse. With 12 stations and non-stop travel between them, PRT promises a transportation option that often surpasses the convenience of cars without adding to existing road congestion. This fits with the Chamber’s focus on the economic and general well being of members. As stated in their letter, “While all Milpitas Chamber of Commerce members will benefit from the prestige of a first-in-the-nation PRT system, 10 members will benefit directly from the improved transit in the Metro Area, especially the 3 located within 100 yards of proposed PRT stations.”
Since 1957, the Chamber has worked with the business community to promote and enhance the commercial, professional, economic and educational progress of Milpitas. As Chamber President Jennifer Cullenbine notes in the Chamber letter, “Over the years, the Chamber has forged partnerships with all segments of business, government, and the community to ensure resources are used effectively to maintain the quality of life in Milpitas. This PRT project seems a perfect partnership fit!”

LoopWorks President, Paul Okoye, embraced the Chamber’s willingness to work together for a better Milpitas. As he noted, IPCC scientists have issued a Code Red, and said “we all have a part to play in reducing CO2 emissions. It’s gratifying that the Chamber recognizes the benefits that the business community will enjoy.” Okoye said the proposed $60M public transit infrastructure will also benefit Milpitas residents and workers. Other Milpitas organizations are invited to contact LoopWorks for a presentation. He also urged anyone interested in the future of Milpitas to watch the 4-minute video about PRT technology, the project, and the vision LoopWorks sees for the Metro Area.
Like the Chamber, LoopWorks is a non-profit mutual-benefit corporation with a governance structure that is local, democratic, and balanced. For more information, visit MilpitasPRT.com or email info@MilpitasPRT.com.
