Airsoft Guns Trigger Lockdown At Viejo Elementary, Sheriff's Say

Students at the Mission Viejo school told officials they saw two men with guns on the campus, according to authorities.

MISSION VIEJO, CA — Viejo Elementary School was briefly sent into a lockdown Thursday afternoon after students reported seeing two men on campus walking around with guns, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

After searching the area, authorities said they found two 12-year-old boys at nearby Granada Park. The boys told deputies they were playing at the school with airsoft guns, the sheriff's department said.

"Normally, they play on campus after school hours and did not realize school was still in session," the sheriff's department wrote on social media. "They were both released to their parents and were reminded of the potential danger they placed themselves in and the unnecessary anxiety they caused to the students and faculty."
