A HAWK, according to the city, is a traffic control device that helps pedestrians cross busy streets safely, particularly at mid-block locations where traditional traffic signals are not used.
HAWK signals are activated by pedestrians, and they use a unique sequence of lights to alert drivers about the presence of pedestrians, the city said.
