Coyote Rams Baby Gate Trying To Get At South County House Cat: Report

A brazen, or simply hungry, coyote tried to break down a baby gate to barge through the front door of a home in Mission Viejo Monday.

MISSION VIEJO, CA — It's scary enough when coyotes prowl the neighborhood looking for an easy meal out of outdoor pets, but it's a whole other level of terrifying when the hungry canine tries to break in to get at a house cat.

That's what happened recently in Mission Viejo, where a brazen coyote was captured on Ring camera footage trying to get at a cat on the other side of a baby gate.

Cindy Stalnaker, who shared the video with ABC7, said she was watching television with her husband when she heard a loud bang at the front door. Upon investigating, they noticed muddy paw prints on the porch and went back to review their security footage.

That's when the couple saw a coyote repeatedly ramming the baby gate they put up to keep their cats inside. The video shows their cat sitting in the entryway watching the coyote run head-first into the gate.

"We ended up putting a baby gate up to keep the cats inside," Stalnaker told ABC7. "That ended up being what prevented the coyote from getting inside the house because that's what he was banging into repeatedly."

The coyote gave up and wandered off but it could have easily hopped the baby gate.

Stalnaker and her husband plan to shop for a security door that can let the breeze in and keep the coyotes out.
