Man Kills Wife in Front of Kids, Then Self in Mission Viejo

A father shot and killed his wife outside a Mission Viejo apartment building, then killed himself in front of their two young children Halloween night, a sheriff’s lieutenant said today.

Scott E. Gimbel, 50, and Linda Sachs Gimbel, 44, were found dead at the scene, according to sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock. The shooting took place during a child custody exchange, where the couple’s 13-year-old and 7-year-old children were present in a vehicle, he said.

Hallock could not confirm the genders of the children.

The shootings were reported about 8:35 p.m. Friday at the Camden Crown Valley Apartments in the 26800 block of La Alameda.

The bodies were found outside Linda Gimbel’s vehicle in the parking area of the Camden Apartments complex, along with a handgun, he said.

Detectives believe the man shot the woman, then turned the gun on himself, the lieutenant said.

The children were uninjured.
