'Passionate' OC Firefighter Named Mission Viejo Employee Of The Year

MISSION VIEJO, CA — Fire Apparatus Engineer Jaime Martinez has been named the Orange County Fire Authority's 2024 Mission Viejo Employee of the Year.

Martinez's strong work ethic and commitment to the city earned him the honor, which is recognized by peers, supervisors and community members alike.

According to the city, Martinez is responsible for the "safe operation and maintenance of the OCFA's Engine 24 in Mission Viejo."

"A crucial role within OCFA, Martinez's primary duties include operating fire apparatus during fire suppression and rescue operations," city spokeswoman Kelly Tokarski told Patch. "He employs specialized firefighting equipment during fire suppression and rescue operations."

In addition, Martinez is a practicing paramedic who is actively involved in fire prevention efforts. He conducts annual building inspections and takes part in public education programs along with Engine 24 crew members, the city said.

Battalion Chief Levi Medina — who acts as Martinez's supervisor — said Martinez's diverse background and wildland firefighting experience enhances OCFA's ability to combat and manage local wildfires.

"I have had the privilege of watching Jaime Martinez's career journey with the OCFA," Medina said. "From his early days as a passionate young firefighter to his current role as a respected instructor and fire apparatus engineer, he has consistently demonstrated profound dedication to his profession ... his contributions significantly enhance public safety and contribute to the overall well-being of our community."

Martinez will be honored by the Mission Viejo City Council during the council's regular meeting on Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. in the Mission Viejo City Hall Chambers, 200 Civic Center.
