Video: Highs and Lows of Mission Viejo in New Art Show

Peter Betts created portraits of California locales, including Mission Viejo, from a bird's-eye-view. The exhibit, "Contours," is displayed at the Mission Viejo Library.

Ever wonder what Mission Viejo looks like from above? It's not as hard to imagine with satellite imaging and maps, but what does an artist see from the sky?

Peter Betts, a sometimes naughty cartoonist, was picked for a one-man exhibition at Mission Viejo Library.

His exhibition is called "Contours," and it contains paintings from his series of the same name. Each painting takes a different series of colors and applies them to the topography of a California city.

Betts, an English native, started with his adopted home town of Laguna Niguel for his series. He expanded around Orange County, and eventually other parts of California. According to his video, he plans to paint areas outside of California eventually.

He calls his paintings "conceptual abstracts." Each comes with a colorful butterfly that works like a map's key, in this case explaining what color represents a certain elevation range.

The paintings will be displayed until Jan. 26, according to Betts' Web site. But you can also see them on video as they're displayed by clicking on the video attached to this article, above.
