Alhambra man gets 29 years to life for killing man who wouldn't give up necklace, an heirloom (pasadenastarnews.com) — A Montebello resident who stopped at Garfield Liquor on Whittier Boulevard was fatally shot in East Los Angeles after refusing to give up a cherished gold necklace, and his killer has now been sentenced to 29 years to life. The case traces Lupian’s final night from Montebello to the shooting, and outlines how three accomplices were later convicted or pleaded guilty.
   

2. State Supreme Court Refuses Case of Two Convicted of LB Man's Murder (mynewsla.com) — A Montebello man and his friend will keep serving 15‑years‑to‑life sentences after the California Supreme Court declined to review their second‑degree murder convictions in a 2019 Santa Fe Springs killing. Prosecutors said the pair chased and beat a Long Beach man, leaving him unconscious in a traffic lane where he was fatally struck by a car, while family members on both sides described the loss as tragic.

His case, and similar incidents in nearby cities, are fueling a broader legal and political fight over immigration enforcement tactics and mistaken detentions.
