La Crescenta Students to Compete in Jump Rope Tournament

The regional competition will be held Saturday at La Canada High School from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Three La Crescenta students will join more than 100 athletes from California and Arizona Saturday as she competes in the USA Jump Rope Region 8 Tournament, according to a press release from the competition.

Annie Brundige, a fourth grader at Valley View Elementary, Solmih Kim, a fourth grader at Fremont Elementary and Ray Lynn Toyon, a fifth grader at Mountain Avenue Elementary will vie for a spot in the USAJR National Championships in Long Beach in June. 

The general public may view Saturday's competition from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at La Cañada High School. Speed events will take place in the morning; freestyle events occur in the early afternoon; and double-dutch freestyle will commence in the late afternoon. The regional competition will emphasize versatility and high degrees of jump roping skills in each discipline.

Returning 2008 USAJR Grand National champion in Male Single Rope Freestyle and Double Dutch Single Freestyle Shane Winsor will compete at this event. Winsor has held six USAJR records and has competed for Team USA at the World Jump Rope Championships.

Philanthropist and gold medalist at USAJR Nationals and World Jump Rope Championships Mike Fry also will participate in the competition. Fry, a Foothill Force team coach, founded a nonprofit organization called One World One Rope to teach jump rope to children in Tanzania and Kenya.  Fry also works with a local nonprofit organization to create after school jump rope programs for underserved areas throughout Los Angeles County.

Jump ropes, concessions and gear will be available for purchase at the event. The Foothill Force Jump Rope Team is a co-ed competition and performance team comprised of athletes across the San Gabriel Valley. The Foothill Force Jump Rope Team is aligned with the United States Amateur Jump Rope (USAJR) and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Foothill Force promotes health and fitness through the growing sport of jump rope.
