Quick-Moving Brush Fire Threatens Homes in Lake View Terrace, Kagel Canyon

An unknown number of homes are being threatened in the area.

LAKE VIEW TERRACE, CA — A quick-moving fire in Lake View Terrace that was threatening homes and disrupting the evening commute Wednesday afternoon has been knocked down.

The fire started at around 2:30 p.m. at the 11700 block of Terra Vista Way and quickly spread to 20 acres. A number of homes were threatened by the fire but none were lost. The fire was knocked down at around 4:30 p.m. More than 60 acres were burned.

The canyon is filled with medium to heavy brush, which, in addition to the Santa Ana Winds, was fueling the fire, Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Firefighters are getting the upper hand on the fire, he said.

More than 125 firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service and LAPD, in a unified command, helped to battle the flames, Scott said.

Water-dropping helicopters and planes were used to help firefighters make gains against the wind and heat-driven fire. Smoke was seen on the 118 and 210 freeways, causing some disruption in the evening-hour commute.

This fire is about 3 miles from the fire that charred 184 acres in May. No homes have been damaged in this fire, and the cause was under investigation, Scott said.
