Update: Over the weekend, the 129th Rescue Wing made its 1,000 save. This article has been updated to reflect this achievement.
Fifty-eight years ago, the 129th Rescue Wing was founded as part of the California Air National Guard.
On Saturday, May 18 the 129th Rescue Wing reached their 1000 life while on mission in Afghanistan, according to its Facebook page. "Since then, two more saves have been executed, bringing the total number of lives saved to 1002," the status update continued.
On Friday, May 17 they inched a little closer to saving 1000 lives with the rescue of another individual.
The 129th is tasked with supporting the Governor's office during state emergencies like fires, floods, earthquakes and hurricanes.
In some cases, like the rescue of a sick sea cruise passenger or Chinese fishermen injured in a diesel fuel fire off the coast of Mexico, the 129th also offers medical assistance.
The 129th Rescue Wing is stationed at Moffett Field.
