Jogger Makes Hate Crime Citizen's Arrest In Mountain View

A jogger in Mountain View claims another man attempted to hit him and called him a homophobic slur.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — A man was arrested on Saturday for attempting to hit a jogger after making a homophobic slur at the runner, Mountain View Police said.

Dispatchers received a call around 3:30 p.m. about a man attempting to attack another man who had been jogging on Vista Slope Hill near Shoreline Amphitheatre. The jogger said that the suspect approached him and accused him of following him, calling him a homophobic slur. The suspect allegedly attempted to swing at the jogger, but missed.

Officers located a person matching the description of the suspect and arrested Howard Walls, 68, after the alleged victim requested to file a citizen's arrest for assault and a hate crime.

"Hate has no place in our community," said Police Chief Chris Hsiung. "I stand by that statement today and always."
