Mistakenly Released Inmate Found In Mountain View

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — An inmate was accidentally released Wednesday from the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City and rearrested a short time later in Mountain View, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Heriberto Avila, 43, of Menlo Park, was arrested on various bench warrants in October and released in error Wednesday morning. Investigators said the mistake was "discovered immediately," and deputies worked with members from several units and the Menlo Park Police Department to track down the inmate.

Deputies said Avila was found in Mountain View late Wednesday morning and rebooked at the Santa Clara County Mail Jail. The sheriff's office plans to complete a thorough review to determine how the release happened.
