New CA Graduation Requirement: Computer Science?
A Silicon Valley assemblymember has proposed new legislation.
SILICON VALLEY — Legislation being introduced by Assemblyman Marc Berman would require that all public high schools in California to offer at least one computer science course and would establish computer science as a high school graduation requirement.
Berman was scheduled to join Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond at a press conference Tuesday morning to announce the proposed legislation.
"Despite being the undisputed cradle of innovation, California has for too long failed to offer students from all backgrounds access to computer science courses, falling well behind 40 states and leaving a growing equity gap," according to a press release from Berman's office.
Twenty-seven other states currently require high schools to offer a computer science course, with five of those states requiring a computer science course for graduation.
