Prowling, Theft Suspect Arrested in Santa Clara County

A 33-year-old homeless man was arrested on suspicion of prowling, stealing mail and carrying a concealed weapon in Palo Alto, police say.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- A man was arrested on suspicion of prowling, stealing mail and carrying a concealed weapon on Sunday afternoon in Palo Alto.

Andrew Moriarty, a 33-year-old believed to be homeless, was reported walking into a woman's backyard in the 3000 block of La Calle Court at 2:36 p.m., then jumping her fence to eventually reach an area of Matadero Canal.

A police officer stopped Moriarty and allegedly found him in possession of four-inch knife in a waistband sheath, a counterfeit bill, a stolen phone, stolen mail and drugs believed to be methamphetamine and heroin.

Police said the mail and phone were stolen from a house in the 800 block of Barron Avenue, and he had been seen on surveillance video at the residence. Officers returned the mail to the residence.

Moriarty was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a concealed weapon, and misdemeanors for prowling, petty theft, having counterfeit money and drugs. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail.
