Murrieta Middle School Earns National Designation As 'School To Watch'

MURRIETA, CA — Murrieta Valley Unified School District announced that Dorothy McElhinney Middle School has been designated a California School to Watch for 2024, recognizing its commitment to academic excellence, student-centered learning, and innovative teaching practices.

The California League of Middle Schools designated the award in partnership with the California Department of Education and is part of a national program identifying high-performing middle schools, according to the district in a recent news release.

"We are incredibly proud to be recognized as a School to Watch," Patane said.

To achieve this recognition, the school underwent a competitive application process, followed by a nationwide in-depth school site visit by middle school education experts. Schools that earn this distinction must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, social equity, developmental responsiveness, and organizational structures that support student success.

"This designation is a testament to the dedication of our teachers, staff, students, and families who work together to create an exceptional learning environment," Patane said. "We are grateful to Schools to Watch for this honor and remain committed to fostering a culture of academic achievement and student growth."

The Schools to Watch program is a national network of over 700 outstanding middle schools across 18 states, with California being the largest state participant. CLMS, a nonprofit organization, supports middle-level educators through professional development, resources, and recognition programs like Schools to Watch.

They aim to empower educators and ensure every student thrives in a nurturing and innovative learning environment.

According to the district, Dorothy McElhinney Middle School will be formally recognized as a California School to Watch and will receive national recognition at the annual conference in June.
