Napa County Remains Under Flood Watch, Wind Advisory

The floodgates remained closed with the Napa River expected to peak Monday evening.

NAPA VALLEY, CA β€” As another in a series of atmospheric rivers dumped rain Monday on the Napa Valley, the North Bay was under a flood advisory and several roads were closed due to flooding.

A National Weather Service flood advisory for Sonoma, Napa and Marin counties expired at 5:45 p.m. Monday. However, a flood watch remains in effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

"Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall and runoff continues," the National Weather Service said. "Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways. Overflowing poor drainage areas. River or stream flows are elevated. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

"At 2:33 p.m., gauge reports indicated elevated water levels due to excessive rainfall and runoff. This is causing urban and small-stream flooding. Between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. Some locations that will experience flooding include...Santa Rosa, Napa, Petaluma, San Rafael, Novato, Rohnert Park, Windsor, American Canyon, Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Larkspur, Healdsburg, Sonoma, Corte Madera, Tiburon, Cloverdale, Fairfax, Sebastopol, Cotati and St. Helena."

The weather service also warned of 20-30 mph winds with gusts up to 50 mph starting at 10 p.m. Monday through 4 p.m. Tuesday. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result, weather officials said.

Road Closures

Roadway flooding (Petaluma Police Department)

As of 5 p.m. Monday, here is the status of road closures in Napa County:

  • Lawley Old Toll Road - Down to one lane open in each direction due to a slip out; Will be closed for an extended period of time
  • Oakville Crossroad is closed due to flooding - Re-opened
  • Butts Canyon has a slide blocking one lane- Re-opened
  • Congress Valley - Small slide blocking one lane
  • Chiles Pope Valley- Re-opened after rocks in the road near Moore Creek Park/Whiskey Crossing
  • 5100 Block Dry Creek- Re-opened after tree blocking one lane
  • Las Amigas Road @ 2636 - Closed due to flooding
  • Dry Creek Road above Wall Road - Currently open; Crews are attempting to save one lane of a slip out

Rain is expected Tuesday and Wednesday in Napa County, followed by a break in the rain Thursday, according to AccuWeather.

Napa River Rising

According to the National Weather Service, the Napa River was expected to peak at just above 21 feet around 6 p.m. Monday. The Oxbow Bypass floodgates remain closed.

"Around midnight, the next band of rain is forecast to come down," the County of Napa said in a storm update. "Please use caution when out on the roads."

People experiencing homelessness can access available shelter beds by calling 707-271-7818 or visiting the South Napa Shelter Day Center at 100 Hartle Court. Monday – Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The winter shelter is also open for evening drop-ins as beds remain available. Gates open at 5 pm., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Napa Valley Expo, Riesling Hall – entrance on Burnell Street. For later access to the Winter Shelter due to work or school evening hours, call 707-997-1287.
