She Plays With Fuerza! Napa Force Takes Aim At Girls’ Sports Equity

Napa Force launches "Ella Juega con Fuerza/She Plays With Force" to break barriers for girls across Napa County.

NAPA VALLEY, CA — A Napa sports group wants to level the playing field for girls from Calistoga to American Canyon, through a countywide equity initiative launched this month.

While Napa is known for its vineyards and affluence, many families face obstacles to participating in youth sports, the sponsor, Napa Force, said. Equipment costs, registration fees, and lack of awareness often keep girls from joining teams.

The initiative, She Plays With Force/Ella Juega con Fuerza, is aimed at eliminating those barriers and opening the door to girls’ lacrosse for families long priced out of organized youth sports.

“This program isn’t just about lacrosse—it’s about equity, confidence and community,” the president of Napa Force, Mary Cooke, said in a statement.

Sports and exercise are associated with a positive impact on physical and mental health, as well as academic performance and self-esteem. The social benefits can also be important. But access to those benefits are tied to race and gender, as well as socioeconomic status, including family wealth and education, according to research.

“We want every girl to know she belongs on the field, no matter her background," Cooke said.

Lacrosse — known for its combination of speed, agility, and teamwork — is a fast-growing team sport in the United States. High school and college programs are expanding, increasing exposure and scholarship opportunities, according to Napa Force. The organizations sees participation in the program helping girls join high school teams, attract college recruiters, and qualify for scholarships.

Napa Force organizers said the initiative is also meant to connect neighborhoods across the county, fostering friendships and leadership skills that extend beyond the sport. By offering bilingual outreach and support, Napa Force is designed to make families feel welcome and informed.

The program offers full scholarships for first-year players, making registration nearly free by covering expenses except for a $35 USA Lacrosse membership, for which financial help is available. Players get access to discounted or loaner equipment. Bilingual materials and coaching help ensure access and belonging for all girls in Napa County.
