"Her wealth of knowledge, experience, and dedication to public safety for over thirty years speaks for itself," Scardina said. "Sylvia will be a tremendous asset to the Sheriff’s Office and the communities we serve."

Moir previously served as police chief in Tempe, Arizona (2016-2020) and as El Cerrito’s Top Cop (2010-2016). She spent most of her early career with the Sacramento Police Department where she served in every division of the department and was the Incident Commander on hundreds of planned and spontaneous events.

"I am excited to return to Northern California where my career began," Moir said in a statement. "The opportunity to serve the women and men of the organization and the Marin County community through modern-day policing is exciting and I am eager to get started."

Moir was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo to the FirstNet Board and is the chair of the FirstNet Governance and Risk Committee.

Moir is also active on the speaking circuit. In 2019, she spoke at a TEDx SoMa’s Modern Campfire series about the complexity of modern-day policing and the importance of practicing mindfulness and developing resilience for enduring service.
