NVC's Student Election Results: New Officers for 2013-14

By Jose Chavez

The Associated Students of Napa Valley College Executive Board elections on May 2 had the highest amount in recent history of new candidates elected to represent the college's student body.

All registered students have the right to vote in the annual elections. Any student, who has completed five units at NVC, has a GPA of 2.0 or better and is currently enrolled in at least five units and who follows other guidelines set by the ASNVC constitution and bylaws may run for office.

The ASNVC Executive Board holds regular meetings on campus. Students are encourage to attend and voice their opinions on campus and community-related issues.

The ASNVC Executive Board has the responsibility for financing and organizing co-curricular and non-curricular activities, such as lectures and various cultural events. It manages funds derived from the sale of ASNVC ID cards, video games and vending machines; it also receives a portion of the profits from the student bookstore.

“ASNVC has given me so much and helped me grow as a person. I wanted to chair elections to make sure that I leave this board knowing I left it in good hands, ” said Rachel Sturn, Sargent of Arms. “ASNVC can provide a direct connection between the students and the administration as well as many other wonderful programs. You can help to write campus policy, you can create campus wide or community events, the possibilities are endless.”

For the coming year the board will address a myriad of issues on and off campus. Technology has become central to students’ social and academic lives with the introduction of a technology fee a few semesters ago to fund improvements such as campus wide WiFi.

The student activities fee funds major campus events and the board is increasing its efforts to do better outreach to students. A big name bookstore is taking over the activities center and there will be big changes in the coming year.

Sustainability is a major factor.  Dr. Ronald Kraft, NVC's President, has shown great interest in getting such a policy enacted to have NVC become a leader in sustainability on the national stage.

“The profile of ASNVC is out, the momentum is changing,” said Kraft. “Congratulations and thank you for your leadership.”
