New Superintendent Chosen By Newark Schools

The school board is expected to approve the appointment at a meeting on Thursday.

NEWARK, CA — Dr. Penelope DeLeon has been chosen as the new superintendent of schools at Newark Unified School District.

DeLeon's hiring is expected to be approved at the next school board meeting on Thursday, with her start date at the district pegged at May 15.

DeLeon worked her way up through the ranks. Her resume includes high school teacher, assistant principal, principal, secondary instructional specialist, interim director of elementary education, and chief of secondary schools. She has experience as a superintendent in Oxnard and Glendora.

"The Board is thrilled to have Dr. DeLeon serve as our superintendent," said Board President Nancy Thomas. "She cares about meeting the individual needs of all students, and I am confident that she will help our district continually improve."

DeLeon is known for a strong career and college readiness focus, and she successfully led a $350 million bond campaign.
