Newark's Mikael Hasan Bats 1,000 With New Scholarship

NEWARK, CA — Mikael Hasan, 13, of Newark, is one of 10 new Harmon & Sue Burns Scholars, and received a $10,000 college scholarship during a pregame ceremony at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Saturday.

Hasan was selected “because of his outstanding dedication to community service through this volunteer work done with Meals on Wheels, his local Cub Scout pack and Junior Giants league,” a news release issued by the organization said.

Maddie Dean, granddaughter of Harmon and Sue Burns, made the announcement that the scholarship was doubled this year from $5,000 to $10,000 per scholar, during a special pregame reception, the news release said.

The increase is sponsored by the Giants Community Fund, Kokua Na Lani Foundation, Dreams33 Foundation and Franklin Templeton Investments, the Giants Community Fund said.

Scholars were presented with a personalized Giants jersey during the ceremony, which was Junior Giants Education Day at the park.

Each year The Giants Community Fund selects 10 eighth grade participants of the Junior Giants as Harmon & Sue Burns Scholars based on leadership skills, character, academic potential and Junior Giants involvement. The scholarship is to be used toward the pursuit of higher education, the organization said.
