Newark Optimist Club Announces Essay Contest

The annual contest is open to all Tri-City students under the age of 19 as of Oct 1, 2022, and have not yet completed high school.

NEWARK, CA — Students of all ages are invited to take part in the annual Newark Optimist Club's annual essay contest, a news release issued by Newark Optimist Club announced.

According to that release, the contest is open to all Tri-City area students. The theme of the 2022-2023 competition is "Who is an Everyday Hero that Brings Out the Optimism in You?"

"The contest is now open to students in Newark, Fremont, and Union City who are under the age of 19 as of Oct. 1, 2022, and have not yet completed secondary school or its equivalent," the news release said.

There is no minimum age to participate and the top three club essays will receive cash prizes of$200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place along with a medallion for each place, the news release said.

The first-place essay will advance to the District Level competition, and have an opportunity to win a $2,500 college scholarship.

"The Essay Contest is designed to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live," Essay Contest Chairman Darryl Reina said. "As Optimists, it is our goal to bring out the very best in each of them."

For more information and application, that includes the official rules, students should visit the Optimist website, the news release said.

Completed Essays and contest applications must be received by midnight, Jan. 20, 2023. Essays and applications are to be sent via email to Darryl Reina, Chairman.
