Beach Cleanup In Newport Beach Set For September: How To Join

September is Coastal Cleanup Month, and on Saturday, Sept. 20, dozens of beach cleanups will take place across the shores of Orange County.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Now that summer is nearing its end, it's time to say "thank you" to the many beautiful beaches that have been serving us well all season.

That's right, this September is Coastal Cleanup Month — and a statewide beach cleanup day is underway in Newport Beach.

This Saturday, Sept. 20, dozens of beaches spread across the coast of Orange County will not only see the familiar beach towels, surf boards and fold-out chairs of visitors looking for a fun day in the sun — but the efforts of countless residents picking up discarded trash from the sandy shores.

"One third of Orange County's tourism economy is bolstered by our ocean economy," County Supervisor Katrina Foley said. "Keeping our beaches, waterways and bays clean preserves our local habitats, maintains their unique beauty and supports a critical piece of our local economy."

Roughly 1,000 volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon to remove trash and invasive plant species from the Upper Newport Bay, as well as other sites.

Volunteers will meet at various mini-cleanup day sites around the 11-mile loop of the bay.

According to organizers, the exact meeting will be shared prior to Sept. 20.

Participants were encouraged to wear old clothes and closed-toe shoes, refillable water bottles, gloves and a trash bag or bucket.

Residents can sign up for the clean-up event at this website.
