Brush Fire Burns Half Acre on Side of 73 Toll Road

It appears a transformer caught fire, sparking the non-injury blaze.

A half-acre brush fire broke out today alongside the San Joaquin Hills (73) toll road near Newport Beach, but did not threaten any structures.

The wind-driven blaze just south of the Catalina View Mainline Toll Plaza near the Newport Beach border was reported at 11:20 a.m. and was extinguished at 12:10 p.m., said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

He said it appears a transformer caught fire, sparking the non-injury blaze, which forced the closure of the two northbound lanes.
