The community's input is being sought by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to determine if fencing would make three of the district's elementary schools safer.
There are 22 elementary schools in the district, but fencing is only being considered at Newport Beach's Andersen Elementary, and Adams and Victoria elementary schools in Costa Mesa. Laura Boss, district spokeswoman, said the community is being asked to fill out an online survey to help the district determine how to provide a safe and secure environment at the elementary schools, while encouraging residents to use open space, fields and playgrounds.
"We pride ourselves on the outdoor park-like environment of the campuses and their aesthetic beauty," Boss said in a released statement. "Some campuses have secure access points around the entire campus, others have open access points to classrooms, and three campuses (Adams, Andersen, Victoria) have completely open campuses."
All of the information gathered from the online surveys will be provided to the N-MUSD Board of Education at its Nov. 12 meeting.
