Coroner IDs Man Killed in PCH Pole Crash

A man killed Wednesday morning in Newport Beach when two cars crashed and one of them hit a pole was identified as a Costa Mesa man, the Orange County coroner's office reported.

Steve Needis, 58, was gravely injured when a Nissan Maxima and a Nissan Quest crashed just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of East Coast Highway and Promontory Point Drive, authorities reported. The Maxima driven by Needis struck a pole and firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to get him out of the mangled car, Newport Beach Fire Capt. Mike Liberto said.

Needis was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in critical condition, where he later died. A second person was treated and released at the scene.

Anyone with information about the fatal crash is asked to contact Investigator Scott Grecco at 949-644-3747 or sgrecco@nbpd.org.
