DUI Checkpoint Scheduled In Newport Beach

The Newport Beach Police Department is enforcing a DUI checkpoint in the city this week. What to know.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Newport Beach police officers are working to make city streets safer, after the department announced a DUI checkpoint to be held Friday, June 13.

The checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," NBPD Lieutenant Josh Vincelet said in a statement. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety."

Residents were reminded by the NBPD that impaired driving does not only include alcohol intoxication. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with safe driving, and marijuana — whether recreational or medical — is considered impaired driving.

Drivers with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, the department said.
