Newport Beach Safety Summit Talks Drowning Prevention: Report
Drowning is one of the top causes of unintentional injury death in children between the ages of 1 and 14 in the United States, the CDC said.
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — A group of public safety advocates and nonprofit organizations converged at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel on Monday for a two-day summit to discuss the best ways to prevent drowning, the Daily Pilot reported.
One method discussed at the California Water Safety Summit is to encourage CPR training in a community so if someone drowns, a bystander could help "bridge the gap" until first responders arrive, the Pilot reported.
Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children under the age of 5 in California. Nationwide it's the second leading cause of injury-related death for children between 1 and 14, the paper reported.
