Newport-Mesa Unified Wants Community Feedback For Track Naming

The district said it received a proposal to name Corona del Mar High's new running track after its longtime track and cross-country coach.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — The Newport-Mesa Unified School District is asking for the public's feedback on a proposal to name Corona del Mar High School's new running track after a longtime track and cross-country coach.

The district said it received a recommendation to name the track after Bill Sumner, who has coached for the high school for nearly 40 years.

"Coach Sumner ... has won many league, CIF and state titles and has been named Orange County and State Coach of the Year," the district said. "Coach Sumner has coached many athletes who have gone on to compete collegiately and in the U.S. Olympics."

Community members have until April 1 to provide their feedback online to the district's Facility Naming Committee.

The track naming is part of a $14.6 million investment made by Newport-Mesa Unified to renovate the Corona del Mar Sports Complex, according to a report from the Orange County Register. Renovations include installing two turf sports fields and a rubber running track.
