UPDATE: Homicide Suspect Shot and Killed by Police Near 170 Freeway After Pursuit

UPDATE 6:45 A.M. FRIDAY

A homicide suspect was shot and killed by police on a southbound off-ramp of the Hollywood (170) Freeway near Burbank Boulevard around 4 p.m. in North Hollywood after leading Los Angeles Police Department officers on a short car chase.

The suspect was believed to be responsible for a shooting in an apartment complex in Sun Valley on the 7300 block of Tujunga Avenue near the intersection with Valerio Street, where two people were killed, according to the LAPD.

"Officers approached the scene and observed a vehicle speeding away," LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera said.

The suspect's car spun out on the Burbank Boulevard off-ramp, according to video caught by the KTLA helicopter. After appearing to swallow some pills, he could be seen getting out of the car and pointing an object that appeared to be a gun at officers before officers opened fire.

"He then reached back into the vehicle and pointed an object at officers," Herrera said. "That is when the officer-involved shooting occurred."

The man killed by police has been identified as Oscar Sermeno, 58, said coroner's Chief Craig Harvey.

There has been no official word from the LAPD yet if the suspect was armed and if it was the same weapon used in the killings.

At least seven officers opened fire on Sermeno, according to the Los Angeles Times. Officers on the police scanner were heard to yell, "Watch your crossfire!" as the shooting on the 170 ramp occurred, which is about two blocks from the LAPD North Hollywood Division Station.

It was initially reported that a second suspect was in the car and wounded, but the Times reported that in fact only one person was in the car.

A 7-Eleven convenient store at the corner of Troost Avenue and Burbank, which is next door to the police station, was reportedly hit by gunfire and a bullet grazed a customer there, Fox11 reported.

For more than 20 years, Sermeno had managed the apartment building where the initial shooting took place, according to Fox11. Witnesses told Fox11 the victims were a father and son doing some work in the apartment building and that the father died while protecting his son during some kind of argument. Police said the father was 41 and the son was 19.

"An argument ensued, and the suspect shot and killed the son," police said in a statement. "The father came out and an argument ensued and the suspect shot and killed the father." The man and his son died at a hospital. Their names were withheld, pending notification of their relatives.

Sermeno fired at a third worker, who was not hit, and then he drove away from the scene, police said. An ambulance was called for a man in his 50s at the Sun Valley shooting location that was complaining of pain in his ears from a loud gunshot, according to information heard on the scanner.

The southbound 170 was closed from Burbank Boulevard to Oxnard Street while an investigation was conducted. As of 11 p.m., officers were still on the scene investigating. The shooting in Sun Valley, which was across the street from the border with North Hollywood, is also in the LAPD North Hollywood Division's patrol area.
