Lankershim Pedestrian Bridge Faces Criticism

Work will start next summer on a $20 million pedestrian footbridge over Lankershim Boulevard and Universal Hollywood Drive as an effort to improve pedestrian safety.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority project will connect the Universal City Metro Red Line stop and Universal Hollywood Drive by crossing Lankershim Boulevard.

The busy intersection sees a lot of foot and vehicle traffic every day, but is an elevated bridge the best path toward addressing the issue?

In a recent Daily News article, opponents say the project is awkward-looking and goes against talks of creating more walkable streets.

Supporters, like LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, say at the end of the day it's all about the safety of pedestrians, the Daily News reports.

Or, as another opinion posed it, maybe an underground tunnel would have been the best approach?

Some Daily News readers expressed in the comments section that the $20 million price tag is overpriced.

Metro approved the project in August. Marc Littman, a spokesman for the agency says construction is expected to begin summer 2013 and last through Dec. 2014.
