City to Drive New Car Dealers Back to L.A. With Big Tax Break

New car dealerships won a tax break Tuesday under a City Council plan to wrest sales from neighboring cities.

“We’ve been out of the city of Los Angeles for many years,” said Councilman Mitch Englander.

Last year, dealerships generated $3.6 million in gross receipts taxes for Los Angeles. With the tax break, city officials believe more dealerships will move into the city, yielding $5.4 million in sales tax, according to KPCC. 

Twenty-five years ago, there were 147 new auto dealers in Los Angeles. Today there are only 52.
