Man Killed By Police In Valley Shooting Was Armed With 'Replica Firearm': LAPD

An initial radio call indicated the man was armed. After he was killed, investigators determined it was a replica gun, police said.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Police shot and killed a man armed with a glass bottle and what was later determined to be a "replica firearm" in the San Fernando Valley earlier this week, the Los Angeles Police Department said Friday.

On Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a radio call regarding a person suspected of assault with a deadly weapon on Orion Avenue near Parthenia Street in North Hills, just east of the 405 Freeway, according to the LAPD.

The call indicted the suspect — Gustavo Ramirez, 50 — "was armed with a glass bottle and a firearm," police said.

A helicopter arrived overhead and directed officers to the intersection where the suspect was located.

"Upon contact, the officers attempted to gain Ramirez’s compliance by issuing verbal commands. Ramirez failed to comply, pointed a handgun at the officers and an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) occurred," police said.

Paramedics responded and transported Ramirez to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

"The handgun used by Ramirez was later determined to be a black plastic replica. The replica handgun was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence," police said.

Force Investigation Division and representatives from the California Department of Justice responded to the scene and are conducting an investigation, police said.
