An armed man continued his standoff with police 11 hours after he first barricaded himself inside a home in the San Fernando Valley.

ARLETA, CA — An armed man continued his standoff with police 11 hours after he first barricaded himself inside a home in the San Fernando Valley, authorities said Monday.

Los Angeles Police Department officers were called at around 1 a.m. Monday to a home near Gruen Street and Canterbery Avenue regarding a report of a man with a gun. Responding officers learned the suspect was armed and refusing to leave the residence, an LAPD spokesman said.

The man is suspected of threatening a family member inside the home, according to the LAPD. The man may have recently returned from a hospital after an overdose when he began the threats, KTLA reported.

The LAPD SWAT team was called out to the location at 4 a.m., police said. Hours later, the team continued its efforts to negotiate the man's surrender.

“[The situation is] dangerous, which is why we’ve evacuated the neighbors,” LAPD Officer Charles Miller told KTLA at around 9 a.m. “It does take time to formulate a plan and try to get the suspect into custody.”
