The LADWP received a report of the burst from the main—a cast-iron pipe—at 3:18 a.m. at 10715 Topanga Canyon Blvd. and Chatsworth Street, Terry Schneider, a spokesperson for the water utility, told Northridge-Chatsworth Patch. The 20 homes without water are located on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, from Chatsworth Street to Santa Susana Pass, she said, adding that two southbound lanes on Topanga Canyon Boulevard have been closed to traffic.

LADWP crews are estimated to restore water service to the affected homes by around 1 p.m., Schneider said, adding, however, that just when water will eventually be restored would depend on the extent of damage caused.

There was no property damage caused by the broken pipe. “We have some street damage, which is minimal, and now the crews are going to have to go into the street to restore the main,” Schneider said.

Schneider also said she was not aware of any flooding on the Topanga Canyon Blvd stretch where the water main broke. She said she was also unaware how old the water pipe is.

The cause of the break is under investigation and more information is expected around 11 a.m., Schneider said.
