NOVATO, CA — Eight North Bay students were arrested this week after police allege they planned an attack on a fellow student and assaulted another who tried to break up the fight.

According to the Novato Police Department, officers were notified about the incident at Sinaloa Middle School around 1 p.m. last Friday. Police allege a group of middle school girls assaulted another student as others began recording on their phones and encouraging the brawl. According to investigators, the group went on to assault another student who attempted to stop them.

Officials said both victims suffered moderate injuries that required a trip to the hospital.

Police worked with the Novato Unified School District and school staffers to identify the parties involved. The department's Police Investigations Section arrested eight girls suspected of initiating the fight Tuesday in Novato. Officials said the students, ages 12 to 14, were booked into Marin County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of conspiracy and felony assault.

"We would like to thank our community members (who provided additional information), witnesses, the Novato Unified School District, and school staff members for their assistance with this investigation," the department wrote on Facebook. "In partnership with our community, we will continue to focus our efforts in keeping our youth safe."

Anyone with information relevant to the case can contact police at 415-897-4361.
