80 MPH Winds, More Than 2 Inches Of Rain Wallop Marin County

PG&E reported that about 18,000 customers lost power overnight, though most had been restored by mid-morning.

MARIN COUNTY — A storm that blew into the Bay Area overnight brought wind gusts of more than 80 mph and rainfall amounts above 2 inches in parts of Marin County, a National Weather Service meteorologist said late Wednesday morning.

The strongest wind gust was recorded at 82 mph on Gunsight Fire Road near Woodacre in Marin, while the most rainfall in the region was also in Marin County at 2.43 inches near Point Reyes Station, meteorologist Brayden Murdock said.

Further south in the Bay Area it was not as rainy, with only about a quarter-inch falling in the Berkeley hills and less than a tenth of an inch in San Jose, though higher elevations in the East Bay and along the Peninsula have seen wind gusts above 50 mph, Murdock said.

"This was going to be more of a wind event than a rain event," he said, noting that a lot of the reports of damage from the storm in the region have been downed trees from the wind and only isolated flooding.

Miller Avenue in Mill Valley was among the thoroughfares in the area closed due to flooding.
PG&E reported that about 18,000 customers lost power overnight, though most had been restored by mid-morning. About 1,600 customers remained without power by late Wednesday morning, with about 600 in Marin County, and PG&E said power would likely be restored by the end of the day.

Murdock said the rain and high winds in the Bay Area are expected to dissipate by the end of the day, with clearer weather and seasonal temperatures in the 70s by the weekend.
"We're going from a taste of winter to back into fall-like conditions," he said.
