Bank Robbery Suspect Linked To Robberies Across Marin, Bay Area

A bank robbery suspect arrested over the weekend is believed to have robbed several banks around the Bay Area the past two months.

NOVATO, CA — A bank robbery suspect arrested Sunday in Berkeley is believed to have robbed several banks around the Bay Area the past two months.

Belmont Police arrested Aklilu Micael Asefaha, 44, of Berkeley, Sunday night, following a joint effort with police officers and detectives from the San Bruno, Colma, Daly City and Oakland police departments.

Novato Police announced Tuesday they have since interviewed Asefaha at the Santa Rita jail and collected evidence for their investigation of a Dec. 30 robbery of Wells Fargo bank in Greenbrae and the attempted robbery that same day of Chase Bank in Novato. Police had obtained an arrest warrant Friday for Asefaha through the Marin County District Attorney's Office for two counts of robbery.

Novato investigators worked with detectives from Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Central Marin Police Authority, Dublin Police and Belmont Police to share evidence and coordinate investigative efforts to identify and locate the suspect in these robberies.

Investigators learned that the same suspect is believed to have robbed other banks Dec. 28 in Santa Rosa, Dec. 30 in Rohnert Park and Jan. 28 in Dublin. Asefaha faces additional charges in other counties related to the robberies in Sonoma, Alameda and San Mateo counties.
