Girl Scout Troop's Cookie Sale Cash Donated to Charity
Troop #31184 in Novato decided to take a unique approach and do something generous with the proceeds this year.

This year, local Girl Scout Troop #31184 in Novato decided to take a unique approach and do something generous with the proceeds from their cookie sales.
Rather than save the earnings to help sponsor their own events, the girls decided that the money raised should go to positively impact lives around the world. In that spirit, the girls donated all of the profits from this year’s cookie sales to some worthwhile causes: World Concern — .44 Cent Cure, Heifer International and Daraja Academy.
World Concern — .44 Cent Cure provides medicine to children in impoverished communities in Asia, North America, and Africa who are suffering from intestinal parasites because of unsanitary drinking water. The troop’s donation will help 100 children recover from this devastating condition.

Heifer International works with communities in countries from the Philippines to Rwanda to end hunger and poverty by giving families a hand up, not a hand out. Gifts of livestock empower families (often women and children) to turn lives of hunger and poverty into lives of self-reliance and hope. The troop’s donation will purchase a Flock of Hope, which includes chicks, ducks and geese, and will provide much needed eggs and manure for crops.
And finally, the troop decided to donate to the Daraja Academy, part of the San Rafael-based Carr Educational Foundation, founded by Marin couple. Daraja is a free boarding school based in Nanyuki, Kenya, for girls ages 13 to 20 who have achieved high academic marks on their exams and are full of potential, but have no financial means to continue their education. There are 104 girls on campus in Kenya. These confident, intelligent, and well-spoken young women are bound for success because of the educational opportunity they have been given at Daraja Academy. Funds received by the organization are allocated toward teacher’s salaries, healthy meals (many of the students would not eat regular meals if they were at home), healthcare (most would not receive any form of healthcare), school supplies, backpacks, field trips, and uniforms.
