Pioneer Park To Be Home To Marin's First Inclusive Playground

New playground will include ramps and platforms to provide access to individuals with mobility limitations and accessory play features.

NOVATO, CA — The city of Novato has announced a new play structure, featuring amenities that provide more opportunities for inclusive play, is coming to Pioneer Park this fall.

The city announced Marin’s first accessible play structure will include ramps and platforms to provide access to individuals with mobility limitations, accessory play features such as an Inclusive Whirl, Expression Swings with an adaptive seat to accommodate individuals with mobility limitations and an accessible Sensory Wave Rock N Raft.

The play structure will be built where the smaller of Pioneer Park’s current play structures stands.

Additional park renovations will also consist of rubberized play surfacing around the entire play structure, three large umbrellas to provide shade and perimeter fencing to enclose both play areas, the city said.

“Over the course of this project, staff has worked in collaboration with Novato’s adaptive needs community to thoughtfully design a play structure with highly desirable adaptive play amenities,” Novato Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Katie Gauntlett said. “We are thrilled that this play structure will soon bring more meaningful play opportunities to our community and look forward to celebrating, and playing, together on opening day!”

The city said the project is supported with grant funding from the Statewide Healthy Play Initiative, provided by GameTime a PlayCore Company, as well as a generous donation from Hennessy Advisors, Inc.

Construction at Pioneer Park, located at 1007 Simmons Lane, began Monday, Sept. 19 and is expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete. During construction, both play structures will be closed to the public.
