Novato District Seeks Substitute Teachers

NOVATO, CA — Amid a nationwide shortage of substitute teachers, a Novato district’s top educator has issued a call for help.

Novato Unified School District Superintendent Jan La Torre-Derby in a newsletter acknowledged that a national substitute teacher shortage has impacted her district and urged community members to help recruit potential candidates.

The NUSD is offering substitute teachers $200 a day. Applicants aren't required to hold teaching credentials as long as they have a bachelor's degree.

“We need your help in encouraging friends and neighbors who may hold a BA and are interested in kindly working with students, to consider subbing in NUSD for $200 a day!” Derby said in a statement.

“You do NOT need a credential to sub, just a BA. I wanted to share with you the October subs needed due to teacher absences.

“I am hoping we have some creative ideas to help address the issue. Everyone’s help appreciated. We just have a demand greater than resources available.”
