2.22.22 Update San Marin High School Accident
Dear Novato Community and Staff,
It is with a heavy heart that I share that Zach Wilhelm, one of the San Marin students involved in the car accident Saturday night, passed away on Sunday. Our prayers and support go out to Zach’s family during this unimaginable time. We also hold in our hearts the three other students involved and their families as they cope with this loss.

Yesterday the healing process began with students attending a mass at Our Lady of Loretto at 9 am then went over to SMHS Library to begin counseling. It was a somber start which ended in tremendous support for one another. Karen Wilhelm bravely spoke to the students imploring them to honor Zack with a positive spirit of love. Karen’s strength had to be divine intervention as I cannot imagine her courage at this time.
Counseling for students and staff will continue this week and next week at SMHS. I want to thank our community partners, Marin County Office of Education, Bay Area Community Resources, North Marin Community Services, Novato Police Department, Novato Fire District, California Highway Patrol and Marin Humane for supporting our students and community during this difficult time.
Last night a vigil was held at San Marin for the student and families involved in the accident. It was well supported, and the outpouring of love and support was evident and the healing process is beginning.
To support our continued healing, Our Lady of Loretto is holding a Mass Wednesday morning, February 23, at 9 am to honor Zach and his grandfather followed by a Prayer Service on Thursday, February 24, at 7 pm.
Respectfully,
Jan La Torre-Derby, Ed.D.
