📰 Here are the top stories today in Orange County:
- Two suspects robbed four teens at gunpoint in the Irvine Spectrum Center restroom. They demanded the youngsters' shoes. One of the victims escaped; the other three lost their sneakers and a baseball cap. (Patch, Fox)
- A driver refused to pull over, and a police chase ensued on the southbound 405 in Costa Mesa. Reportedly, the vehicle was a Fit For Life 1 van that was stolen from a repair shop. The chase continued through Irvine, Mission Viejo, and San Juan Capistrano. The California Highway Patrol caught up with the driver in Carlsbad, where he stopped at College Boulevard and Faraday Avenue. (KTLA)
- The Newport Beach city council approved an ordinance making “camping on public property when shelter beds are available” illegal. “Councilwoman Lauren Kleiman said the ordinances are aimed at protecting homeless people from the perils they face living on the streets.” Critics of the ordinance call it “heavy-handed” and remind officials that some unhoused neighbors aren’t cut out for staying at a shelter. (Voice of OC)
- When Hurley stepped down in 2013, Vans became the title sponsor for the World Surf League’s US Open of Surfing, which brings huge crowds to Huntington Beach. In February, Vans stepped down, and we now learn that Wallex.US has signed a one-year title sponsorship deal. (Shop Eat Surf)
- Disneyland announced some temporary ride closures. “Soarin' Around the World” will close on July 5 and reopen on July 14. The monorail closes on the same day. “Toy Story Midway Mania” closes on July 17. We don’t have reopening dates for the monorail or the Toy Story ride, but they might remain closed until Aug. 8.
