ANAHEIM, CA — Parents, get ready! Hugs and autographs are returning to Disneyland.

Shawn Slater, senior communications manager for Disney Live Entertainment, wrote in a blog post that "traditional character greetings" will return as early as April 18 to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, as well as aboard Disney Cruise Line and at Aulani Resort in Hawaii.

"It’s been so great to see live entertainment returning to our theme parks, resorts, and cruise ships, and today, I’m thrilled to tell you about another quintessential Disney entertainment experience that’s on the way back," Slater said.

He added: "That’s right! Very soon, you will once again be able to hug Mickey Mouse, get an autograph from Mulan, and share a laugh with Goofy. We know many of you have missed these special moments, and your Disney character friends have missed you, too!"

Disney had scaled back the greetings over the last two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But in California, 28.1 million people have been fully vaccinated, or 71 percent of the population. Furthermore, California reported an average of about 2,760 cases per day in the last week, falling 28 percent from two weeks ago. Deaths fell 43 percent.

The news comes after the state saw its highest average cases in January amid surging omicron cases. It recorded its highest average deaths in January 2021, more than a year ago.

"Recent trends and guidance have provided opportunities for us to bring back some of our most beloved magic, like character greetings and dining experiences," Slater said. "While not all locations will be available immediately, we anticipate reopening in phases throughout the spring and early summer."

Disneyland will also see the return of several nighttime spectaculars this spring, including “World of Color,” “Disneyland Forever,” “Fantasmic!” and “Main Street Electrical Parade,” celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Disney Cruise Line guests, meanwhile, will once again treat guests to fireworks at sea and Broadway-style shows on all ships.
