Justice Department Sues OC Registrar Over Non-Citizen Voting Records

The U.S. Department of Justice sued Orange County Registrar of Voters Bob Page for reportedly not providing records related to non-citizens.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Orange County Registrar of Voters Bob Page did not provide full records related to the removal of non-citizens from voter registration lists, a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit said.

The Justice Department alleged that Page refused to provide full, un-redacted records related to the removal of non-citizens from the county's voter registration lists and failed to maintain an accurate voter list in violation of federal law, according to the complaint.

The complaint accuses Page of being in violation of the Help America Vote Act, a 2002 law that triggered reforms to the country's voting process.

"Orange County has undermined [voter] confidence by refusing transparency of its voter information, in violation of federal voting laws, and concealing the unlawful registration of ineligible, non-citizen voters," the complaint said.

According to the lawsuit, the Department of Justice received a complaint from a family member of a non-citizen in Orange County who had apparently received an unsolicited mail ballot from the county registrar, despite their citizenship status.

On June 2, the attorney general requested documents from Jan. 2020 that show the number of voter registration records in Orange County that may have been canceled because the registrant did not meet citizenship requirements, the lawsuit said.

The complaint alleged Page responded to the request but redacted certain information regarding non-citizens, including their driver's license or state ID numbers, social security numbers, language preferences and signature images.

The lawsuit is one of several that the Trump Administration has been involved in over its attempts to gain access to Americans' private information from voting to medical and social security records

According to the lawsuit, the redacted data "prohibits the attorney general from making an accurate assessment" of the Orange County Registrar's compliance with election laws.

OC Registar Bob Page did not immediately respond to request for comment.
