Man Gets Life In Prison In Shooting Over Bumpers Touching In OC

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — A Fullerton man was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison for shooting a man during a dispute sparked by two vehicles touching bumpers in a Santa Ana parking lot, court records show.

Johnell Marquise Jackson was convicted June 4, 2024, of three counts of attempted murder, with jurors finding true sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder, firing a gun causing great bodily injury and discharge of a gun at a car.

Defense attorney Renee Garcia argued for a new trial because jurors were given further instructions and closing arguments on a lesser charge they could consider after they reached verdicts. Orange County Superior Court Judge Walter Schwarm denied the motion.

The shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. Feb. 18, 2024, at a 99 Cents Only store parking lot at 1514 N. Main St., the Santa Ana Police Department reported.

The victim, Kevin Parades, initially thought the dispute between Jackson and the driver of the car Paredes was in was "playful," according to prosecutors.

But as they were driving away, shots rang out and Parades suffered a through-and-through gunshot wound to his left forearm, prosecutors said.

About five hours after the shooting, the defendant's brother flagged down a Buena Park police officer and said he was in the car with Jackson during the incident, prosecutors said.
