Man Shot To Death, Another Hospitalized In Shooting Involving Anaheim Police

The victim, who was said to be about 19 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

ANAHEIM, CA — A young man was shot to death by police and another person was hit with a non-lethal round in Anaheim, authorities said Sunday.

Two officers from the Anaheim Police Department's Gang Enforcement Unit were on patrol when they contacted several people in front of a residence in the 800 block of South Philadelphia Street at 9:32 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. Matt Sutter said.

The location is a few blocks east of Anaheim Boulevard, near the Anaheim Packing District.

"During the encounter, a confrontation occurred, leading to an officer-involved shooting," police said. "A male adult was struck by gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A firearm was located at the scene."

The confrontation and shooting triggered an unruly crowd, and at least a dozen people were detained. One person was struck by a non-lethal round during the confrontation and taken to a hospital as a precaution, police added.

"The officers involved in the initial shooting incident suffered minor injuries," Sutter said.
