OC High School Running Team Struck By DUI Suspect, 8 Hospitalized: Report

Eight students were hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries, and the driver was hospitalized and arrested, police said.

ANAHEIM, CA — Eight members of the Anaheim High School track team were injured Wednesday afternoon when a suspected DUI driver crashed into them, according to multiple news reports.

Police say the track team was on the southwest corner of North Harbor Boulevard and North Street sidewalk waiting to cross just before 3 p.m. when the driver swerved off the road and struck them.

The students were all taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. They all had various types of injuries, according to police. Their conditions were not immediately known.

"As a parent myself, you send your kids to school, you trust they're gonna be safe and a tragedy like this happens. It's very unfortunate," Anaheim PD Sgt. Matt Sutter told CBS News. "I feel sorry for the coach who had to see this happen to his kids."

The driver, identified by authorities as a 27-year-old Anaheim resident, was also taken to the hospital for treatment, police said.

Officers arrested the 27-year-old driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to CBS News.

The team's coach was running behind the students when the collision happened, police said.
